Risk assessment

Above I have completed a risk assessment table to show the risks that may come with filming a production. I have completed it so I am able to weigh out risks and any actions I need to take to prevent any accidents/incidents happening when my filming takes place, it also allows me to weigh up the level of risk and if it will be a major or minor issue for me and my team. I have presented this information in a table because it is clear and easy for me to follow as well as being professional and effective. I feel as though by completing this piece of pre-production it will have a positive impact on my short film as it allows both me and my peers to be safe and allows us to take any necessary actions to prevent any incidents, it shows I am using initiative and care.

Actors permission

Here is the proof of permission from one of the actors within my production - this email confirms he is happy of participation and can start filming as soon as I need him.

Evidence of changing speed

Here is evidence of me changing the speed of a clip, I changed the speed of two of my clips to create effect. The music behind these particular clips were of quite a slow pace therefore I wanted the video clip to match the pace. If the clip was too fast for the music then the effect would be lost. With changing speed it also creates variety within my work - I did this by using final cut express.

Booking equipment

Here I have inserted a picture of my proof of equipment booking, this is proof of any steps taken before the production process begins. I have hired a DSLR, 2lens, SD card, tripod, microphone and a steady camera.

Evidence of lighting techniques

Above is proof of me using lighting techniques, for this particular clip I went in an extremely dark room and simply took the flashlight on my iPhone and shone it just behind the camera to create shadows - this shows that to create effect and mood I do not have to have complex equipment, I can use equipment I already have to hand - it's about how I use the equipment to make it effective which I feel i accomplished.

Evidence of SFX

Here I have inserted proof of me including SFX within my short film. I have used the 'echo' filter, I have done this to create a more eerie feel within my production - the genre of  my short film is a thriller therefore I needed effects and filters to match this genre. If no special effects were included within my short film it would be left quite bare and not reaching its full potential. As we know, professional films use a full range of SFX, therefore I know from seeing examples it is essential that I do the same.

Evidence of sourcing Royalty Free Sounds

Above I have inserted a screengrab of proof of me sourcing Royalty Free Sounds, I had to source these to add effect to my short film. Royalty Free Sounds help to enhance sound but also add greater effect to my short film, for example above I have sourced footsteps for one of my scenes - without these the natural sound of footsteps in my film may not be portrayed effectively.

Proof of using camera and clapperboard

Here is evidence of me using a camera and clapperboard - both these pieces of equipment are vital parts of my production as the camera allows me to film everything and the clapperboard allows me to organise my footage and takes.

Evidence of importing footage

importing footage 1.pngAbove is a screenshot of where I have imported all of my footage to my 'raw footage' folder that I created - I did this because I needed all of my footage to be in one accessible place - I then went on to organise them further. Organisation is a huge part within pre-production - without organisation I would find it extremely difficult to keep track of what clips I need and don't need, it enables me to keep things neat and tidy.

Evidence of constructing tilting

constructing film titles.png
Here I have included two screenshots of proof of me constructing some of my titles within my short film. I used iMovie to construct these as I felt that iMovie was an easy software to use and would make them look most effective. I wanted to include these title clips as it would give my short film a professional look and feel.

Raw footage log sheet

Above I have inserted a screen grab of my raw footage log sheet. I created a log sheet to enable me to establish which of my footage is useful and which footage I can discard. It also allows me to keep track of how much and what exact footage I have included - I did this by just writing the information into a table by hand.

Proof of news report script

Here I prepared a script for the news report so Beatrice was able to read it as she acted in front of the camera. Without this script, Beatrice might have struggled to remember what she was saying and for organisation purposes it helps. A script is an important part of pre-production to enable things to run smoothy and efficiently.

Location Recce

Above I have completed a location recce which is a pre-filming visit to a location to determine its suitability for filming, including access to necessary facilities and assessment of any potential lighting or sound issues. I have also completed this as it allows me to try and eliminate any issues before hand, allowing filming on the day to run as smooth as possible, it also enables me to decide whether the chosen locations are even suitable in the first place before filming begins. I completed this table on a simple 'Microsoft Word' document.

Evidence of editing - Sound effects

editing sound.png
Above I have inserted a screen grab of me editing sound effects that I have used, I have added in a 'cross fade' which allows the volume of any audio used within the clip to decrease towards the end of the clip to make it a smooth transition between the previous and next clip. I used 'Final cut express' to do this, again I stuck with using 'Final cut express'  as this is the software I was already using to edit my short film in therefore it makes things easier for me to do as much editing as possible within the same software rather than swapping between different software constantly.

Evidence of editing (filters)

Above I have inserted a screenshot of me colour correcting one of my video clips. The clip I colour corrected was quite dark which was not the intention, therefore I decided to colour correct the clip by increasing some of the filters such as 'whites' and 'saturation' to lighten the clip and make the colours brighter for clearer and greater effect for the audience. Without this step the clip would have been left quite dark and unclear for the audience therefore losing effect.

Proof of uploading to YouTube

Here I have inserted a screenshot of me uploading my final film to YouTube. This is an important part of pre-production as it showcases my media skills but also enables it to be available for the public.

Proof of organising footage

organising footage.png
Above I have shown proof of me organising footage into 'good take' and 'bad take' folders. I have done this as it's a vital part of pre-production. Without these steps, it's very easy for me to get confused and lose track of which clips I need and don't need also meaning that the production of my short film will become a longer process but also more complicated for me.

Evidence of editing - Transitions

video transitions.png
Above I have inserted evidence of me adding transitions into my short film, I used 'final cut express', I used this software as it was the software I was originally using to edit my whole film in the first place so felt that it was easiest to use all of the facilities already in the software to my advantage. I wanted to include tranistions as I felt that they enabled my film to flow smoothly without it becoming jumpy or unclear for the audience.

Storyboard

I have completed a storyboard for my film opening as it helps to reveal whether my concept will work or not and helps to determine the direction the course is going to take. I have presented my film opening in the format of a storyboard as it helps me clearly see all scenes I need to film and helps make it clear to others too - it makes production much easier. This storyboard includes the shots I need, the duration they will be shot for and the order they'll be laid out as well as all of these factors, it saves me time because in the long run it will help my creation process run more smoothly.

After completing my filming process I realised that not all of the scenes I included in my storyboard were effective or suitable to film therefore I adjusted to the films needs to get a better end result.
